How I Became the Postpartum Fairy Godmother

I remember when I first learned about doulas. I was fresh out of college in 1999 and I tagged along with a nanny friend to a birth festival.

This was not a parenting expo like we would see at the Philadelphia Convention Center.

This was a Northern California hippie childbirth bonanza with flowy skirts, beautiful art, and lots of tofu-based finger foods.

Ah, the good old days! I was young and I wanted to immerse myself in all things birthy, so I jumped at the chance to train as a birth doula at the local birthing center.

So much has changed since then!

The families I’ve worked with have had many different approaches to living and facing the realities of life.

The sense of wonder that I discovered at the festival evolved into a real skillset and true acceptance that there are many ways to give birth and raise children.

The common thread in all the parents I have been lucky enough to work with is the loving anticipation of their new growing family.

The birth might not go as planned, recovery might throw some major obstacles in our way. But, the baby is here and our hearts have grown.

I hold a high vision of your family while we handle the new postpartum challenges, from the poopy diapers to the sore perineum.

I can help you to filter out the noise that comes from a million different directions, with so many conflicting ideas pressing on your mind.

I will keep pointing you back to the love at the core of it all, while we tackle all the dishes, blow outs, and unexpected moments unfolding during those initial months with your baby.

I have so much respect for your role as a parent and this special moment in time. I would be absolutely honored to be a part of your postpartum support team.
